Students with documented disabilities are protected under Section 504
of the Rehabilitation act of 1973 and the Americans with Disabilities
Act of 1990. These laws required that reasonable accommodations be provided
to all qualified students.
Proper documentation of a disability must be on file with the Disabled
Student Services (DSS) before accommodating can be provided. Special assistance
and academic accommodating must be arranged in a timely manner before
each semester begins, at least within the first two weeks of the semester.
It is the student's responsibility to contact DSS. For more information
on the documentation guidelines contact the DSS Coordinator.
The accommodation services may include:
- Note takers
- Readers
- Tutoring referral
- Interpreters
- Extended time on exam
- Distraction free area for testing
- Alternative testing formats
- Counseling sessions for support and problem solving
- Referral as needed for community services
Assistive devices such as tape recorders are available. DSS also offers
access to tape recorded materials with organizations such as Recordings
for the Blind and Dyslexic, and Library for the Blind.
