The Beautiful Life Nurse Preparation Program

Educational Success

Principles of Educational Success

1. The First Law of Learning is we must do it to learn it.

To hear something, to see something, to read something doesn’t make it ours; we must express an idea or a feeling; we must perform a skill to make it ours.

2. The Second Law of Learning is we must repeat it to retain it.

Repetitive drills can feel tiresome and boring, but they are vital to the memorization process. Flash cards make an excellent memorization device, especially as two students pair off and take turns administering them to each other. No skill is acquired and perfected without diligent practice.

3. Be where you are supposed to be when you are supposed to be there.

Perfect attendance is a sure foundation to academic excellence; set a personal goal of perfect attendance. Things do happen in life that take precedence over attending a class, but to establish and maintain the habit of personal dependability essential to a career in the health care field, you must never take lightly failure to be where you are supposed to be.

4. Work hard and smart.

Smart and diligent preparation for tests reduces anxiety. Smart preparation includes persistently querying a teacher for specific guidance in preparation. If reviewing for a test reveals areas of vagueness, seeking clarification from other students, teacher or tutor will help.

5. Plan for success.

Do not neglect either short or long range goal setting and plan.

6. Strive for excellence, completeness and punctuality.

Employing these in fulfilling assignments will lead to academic excellence.
With each assignment consider how you have done in each of these three.

7. Endure to completeness.

Whether an individual assignment or a class or a semester, establish the habit of finishing the things you start.

8. Focus and energize your intelligence.

A determined effort to focus and concentrate is vital to receiving the most from any display of information.

9. Be honest and straightforward in all your dealings.

The foundation for all enduring relationships and for gaining and keeping the confidence of all people of good will is integrity. As a nurse there will come trials of your commitment to honesty. If you have formed the habit of always being honest you will shine through these trials.

As you reflect upon the week while doing the Performance Interview, be honest with yourself and in your responses.

Improvment in life is blocked by dishonesty.
